How to make a saddle in Minecraft (1.17)

Your Minecraft world is a vast area that can take you quite a while to explore. If you’re looking to travel around the map, one of the best ways to do this is by taking a ride on a mob. To give yourself this ability, you will need to get yourself a saddle. While this sounds like something you’d be able to craft easily, you are actually in for a surprise, because getting a saddle will require you to do a bit more work than that.

How to craft a saddle

Unfortunately, there is no way to make a saddle in Minecraft. The saddle is a loot drop, that can be obtained in a variety of different ways. You can get them from chests in spawned structures, fishing, trading, and by having it drop from mobs like the strider or ravager.

Obtaining a saddle

As mentioned above, you can’t craft a saddle, so you will have to get one as a loot item or via trading. We will walk you through the best methods of getting yourself a saddle below.

There are a lot of locations where you can find chests, these include Dungeons, Bastion Remnants, Desert Temples, End City, Jungle Temples, Nether Fortress, Strongholds, and Villages. Among this group of locations, the easiest to find are going to be Desert Temples and Villages. Temples spawn pretty frequently in desert biomes and they are easy to spot because they are above ground. You can also find Villages commonly, which can spawn in a variety of biomes, and are also easy to locate because they take up quite a bit of area.

If you aren’t having luck locating chests, then fishing is another option to try. You have just about a 1% chance to fish up a Saddle with a standard Fishing Rod. However, you can double that chance if you can get enchant your fishing rod with Luck of the Sea. There’s three levels of the enchantment, and the third will give you a near 2% chance of fishing up a saddle!

If you have a Village nearby, you can hope that there’s a leatherworker villager. If so, you can level them up by trading items to them and at master-level, they will hopefully offer you a saddle as a trade option!

Loot Drops

A couple of different mobs will have a chance to drop a saddle when killed. One is the strider, which can sometimes spawn with a zombified piglin riding it. If this is the case, you can slay the strider and you will have an 8.5% chance to have a saddle drop. Unfortunately, striders only spawn in The Nether, so you will have to find them there. The better option is if you can trigger a raid, which will happen if you have the Bad Omen status and you enter a village. If you can reach wave 3 of the raid, the ravager will spawn. This is a tough mob, but if you can slay it, it will drop a saddle guaranteed!

Those are all the ways to get a saddle in Minecraft! While you can’t make one yourself, you shouldn’t have too much trouble getting one if you explore around a bit. You can learn more about the game by visiting the Minecraft section of our site!
